World Child Cancer: Every Child Deserves a Chance
At World Child Cancer, our mission is clear: to ensure that every child with cancer, no matter where they live, has access to the treatment, care, and support they need to survive and thrive. In many low- and middle-income countries, this is far from reality. Children are often diagnosed too late, and treatment is either unavailable or unaffordable. We exist to change that.
Through our programmes across Africa, Asia, and Latin America, we work hand-in-hand with hospitals and ministries of health to improve survival rates and deliver compassionate, holistic care. We advocate for policy change, build strong partnerships, and stand beside families during one of the most difficult journeys imaginable.
Shamila's Story
Hospitals can be daunting for children with cancer, where fear of procedures and pain is often overwhelming. At World Child Cancer, we believe care must nurture both body and mind. That’s why we champion play therapy, transforming hospital wards into spaces of comfort, creativity, and healing.
At Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital in Malawi, Play Therapist Aida Nkhoma helps children like Shamila, cope with treatment through guided play. Diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia, Shamila lost her ability to walk for months. But play therapy kept her spirits high and motivated her recovery.
“I always wanted to come play, but I couldn’t walk. When I started walking again, I was so happy—I could finally join in.” – Shamila
Play therapy reduces anxiety, builds resilience, and improves treatment outcomes. With tools like the Xploro app, children learn about their care in simple, friendly ways, making the unknown less scary.
Thanks to your support, we train healthcare workers like Aida to deliver this vital emotional care.
